We were not prepared.
Here are spoilers for the final episode of the third season of ‘The Boys’
Until now, BlackNoir it had been a great enigma for much of ‘TheBoys’, Amazon Prime Video series. A silent but deadly killer, until recently.
Those desperately clinging to the hope that there was an intriguing backstory coming our way were finally rewarded in the seventh episode of the third season of ‘The Boys’.
The flashbacks of the chapter, one of the best episodes of ‘The Boys’, were shelling the layers of the onion of the mysterious super, revealing a painful and twisted past that is intertwined with that of Soldier Boy himself. A past that included abuse and degradation at the hands of the leader of Payback.
This truth goes a long way in explaining why Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell) is the way he is, as well as his unnatural codependent relationship with Patriot (Antony Starr).
As Mitchell explained to DigitalSpy: “[Noir] He has some demons and some fears that he thought he had escaped and it turns out he hasn’t. So he has to fight them and make some tough decisions.”
Those demons take the form of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). The events that have occurred between them are so deeply marked that we would not be surprised if they were a nightmare.
The fear that Soldier Boy would one day return to take revenge on those responsible for his capture (including Noir) was justified, as we now know. Noir knows he was on Soldier Boy’s kill list and has been shivering in his black boots ever since he found out he was back.
Fans have been waiting a long time to scratch under the plated surface of Noir’s suit and this is exactly the juice they’ve been hoping to find.
Undoubtedly, many foamed at the mouth when, flanked by his Looney Tunes team (pay attention, by the way, to the new madness that James Gunn is preparing, which will feature John Cena in a live-action alongside Looney’s Coyote Tunes), Noir steeled himself to “fuck the Soldier”. Tweety’s words, not ours.
To recap, and while we wait for the return of the band led by Carnicero in the future fourth season, here you can find out what happened in ‘The Boys’: the explained ending of season 3 on Amazon Prime Video. But, in short, The Patriot forgives Noir. for leaving and wraps him in a teasing hug that suggests that he too is on board with the plan to “kill Soldier Boy”.
Their friendship would be truly touching if it weren’t built on the bones of dark deeds and carnage. Alas, all good things – even their sick and twisted bond – must come to an end.
During a conversation from black heart to black heart, Patriot talks too effusively about how well he knows Not to goeven the scarred face that hides behind the mask, stating: “I know you. I see you”.
He can read Noir like an open book, he tells her. She is able to discern when Noir is happy, sad, or dishonest, which is unfortunate for him because Patriot threw a huge curveball at him and blinking would have been a mistake.
When Patriot asked him I did know From the beginning that Soldier Boy was his fatherNoir couldn’t lie. Instead, his strong nod was met with a deep sense of regret as the own self leader of the Seven disembowelled him... in the true sense of the word.
The Patriot literally buried a fist deep in Noir’s abdomen and crushed him, letting his entrails spill out in front of him. That is all. The end. Noir makes it to the finish line, where he runs out of steam. Blood, guts and death.
imagine the disappointment among fans of all the world. Noir, dead, fair when his character development was about to get underway. We can’t help but feel that his death was somewhat premature.
The previous seasons, filled with his silent musings, are worthless when you consider that this abrupt death was the culmination.
‘The Boys’, without a doubt one of the best series of 2022, committed a cardinal sin of television. They condensed their interesting story arc into a few episodes and patted themselves on the back for a job well done.
Not to go had the potential to be one of the most interesting and round characters from ‘The Boys’. Not only because of how deeply embedded he was in Vought’s murky history, but also because of his bond with father and son.
It feels like he barely became an established character before they rushed in to kill him.
Consequently, his disappearance had an impact of dissatisfaction and it does not seem clear why the creator decided to remove it right now.
Surely there was room for more. No doubt many would have been curious as to who Black Noir might be outside of Patriot’s shadow and fear of Soldier Boy’s return. We also wouldn’t mind another trip down animation lane.
Unfortunately we have been robbed of that opportunity to find out. Goodbye Noir, we will try to remember you in the next seasons.
