Margareth Menezes confirms the presence of Culture in Italy at the G7

The Minister will also have a private audience with Pope Francis

Brazilian Culture Minister Margareth Menezes has confirmed that she will attend a G7 ministerial meeting in Naples, southern Italy, on September 20-21, as part of a mission to Europe that will also include Madrid, Spain, and a meeting with Pope Francis.

Next Friday (20), the Ministers of Culture of the group will visit the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, an ancient Roman city on the outskirts of Naples devastated by the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD.

On Saturday (21), Margareth will be guest of honour at the G7 external engagement segment, which will have as its theme the use of culture to promote sustainable development around the world, with a focus on the African continent.

Italy will chair the group in 2024 and has invited Brazil, which leads the G20 this year, to most of the meetings scheduled on the agenda, including the leaders’ summit held in June, which was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

During her visit to Italy, Margareth Menezes will also have a private audience with the Pope on September 18, followed by meetings with the head of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça; the new Italian Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli; and the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, a former admirer of Lula.

This will be the Minister’s second visit to the country during her term. The first time, in May 2023, Margareth was robbed while on a boat in Venice.

The mission to Europe will begin this Friday, in Madrid, where the minister will visit museums, participate in events and meet with the Spanish Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun.
