Harold Perrineau Helped Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes blend modernity with Shakespeare’s language in a 1996 version of the classic tale of teenage love that went horribly wrong. In 2015, he explained that he had to let go of all his preconceived ideas about how Shakespeare should be performed when he took on the role.
“When we did Romeo + Juliet, I was only acting at school, so I had a very specific idea of how to do it that came from studying. Very classic. So when I got the job… everything I learned was thrown away. We didn’t do anything, I didn’t learn big speeches, neither my diction, nor iambic pentameter. It was all thrown away“, he said Harold Perrineau.
In 2020, the actor explained about Mercutio, Romeo and the latter’s cousins:As they appeared, everyone in America could understand who these guys were and what they were up to. The only thing that was ambiguous was relationships: love or desire. This is left up to interpretation.“
