The TV station will hold a meeting between candidates for mayor of São Paulo this Sunday, the 15th, at 10 p.m.; stricter rules have been adopted to avoid drops observed in previous programs
The next debate between the candidates for San Paolo City Hall will be held on Sunday 15th, at 10 pm, on TV Cultura. The event will have stricter rules to avoid the disrespectful atmosphere seen in previous debates. Among the punishments foreseen is up to the expulsion of candidates who commit three infractions, such as, for example, the use of vulgar language or the use of political advertising accessories.
The campaigns hope that these measures will promote a more civil debate and allow for the discussion of proposals for the city. The six best-ranked candidates in the electoral polls were invited: Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), José Luiz Datena (PSDB), Marina Helena (Novo), Pablo Marçal (PRTB), Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Tabata Amaral (PSB), in alphabetical order.
The latest Datafolha poll, published Thursday 12, shows the mayor of São Paulo and candidate for re-election, Ricardo Nunes, technically tied with the deputy Guilherme Boulos. The emedebista, however, is numerically ahead, with 27% of voting intentions, against 25% for Boulos. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points. They are followed by Marçal (19%), Tabata (8%), Datena (6%) and Marina (3%).
Members of the MDB campaign praised the rules TV Cultura and other campaigns have defined. However, they expect the broadcaster to be firm in enforcing the rules and sanctions if necessary. The mayor’s interlocutors say Nunes intends to focus on discussing proposals for the city during the event, but they believe the incumbent will be ready to defend himself if he is targeted.
Boulos’ campaign coordinator, Josué Rocha, says he expects a civil debate, without room for disrespect and fake news. “For our part, we will have a proactive debate to present solutions to the countless problems of São Paulo, without being guided by the lies and aggression of our opponents. This will be our position, and more than that: this is the position we expect from someone who runs for mayor of the largest city in Latin America,” he said.
Previous debates between mayoral candidates have been marked by insults and vulgarity. In the event promoted by TV Gazeta and the MyNews channel earlier this month, the candidates flouted the rules, exchanging attacks and derogatory nicknames, leaving the proposals for the city in the background. To prevent this from happening again, TV Cultura has adopted stricter rules for its debate.
The broadcaster has banned the presence of the public, the use of cell phones for filming or live broadcasts, the use of hats and other accessories, as well as vulgar language. The main novelty, however, is the sanctioning system. If a candidate breaks any rule, he will receive a warning and will lose 15 seconds for the next answer. For the second violation you will lose 30 seconds. In the third, regardless of the rule violated, you will be expelled from the debate.
Despite the strict rules, Marçal said during a hearing Statewho will maintain the same strategy as in previous debates, focused on attacking opponents. His aggressive style has been criticized by other campaigns. Ricardo Nunes’ interlocutors, for example, say that Marçal is more interested in “sealing” and ambushing his opponents, rather than discussing proposals.
Tabata Amaral’s campaign is skeptical of the new rules. One member, with reservations, said that he does not believe that TV Cultura would expel Marçal from the debate, even if he had committed the infractions. Furthermore, the team assesses that Marçal’s expulsion could benefit him, as he seeks to support the narrative of being “persecuted by the system.” However, the general assessment of the PSB campaign is that the climate of this debate will be less hostile than in previous ones.
Another issue raised by Tabata’s campaign is that this will be a “question-free strategy” debate. In previous events, candidates could choose who to ask questions to. In the TV Cultura debate, however, the respondent will be drawn live, which will require candidates to be prepared to face all opponents, rather than focusing on a strategy aimed at a specific opponent.
A Datena interlocutor raised similar points to those of the Tabata campaign, saying that the extraction of the interviewees will make it difficult to create a specific strategy for the debate. However, he added that the PSDB candidate should focus his criticism on Pablo Marçal, highlighting the alleged involvement of members of Marçal’s party with the criminal faction Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC).
In turn, Marina Helena’s campaign hopes that TV Cultura will enforce the agreed rules. According to the Novo team, if the rules are respected, the debate will be a unique opportunity for the candidates to concretely discuss the city’s problems. Their expectation is that the rules will favor Marina, allowing her to present her proposals to a wider audience.
