Do you remember your first scare at the movies? Your first scare in a dark room? From that very moment, the very first moment, where you jumped in front of a very scary scene, were you sweating, screaming, or something else? I remember it like it was yesterday, even though it’s been a long time…
I was scared for the first time in front of the big screen in December 1982. I was 6 years old then (please don’t do the math!) and I was in the main room with my mom, third row to the right. My dear cinema in Seine-et-Marnais, Méaux. The movie I was about to discover with wondering eyes this winter afternoon? Steven Spielberg’s Certain ET the Extra-Terrestrial!
Before discovering the great SF classics Spielberg (who has a radical opinion on the film), my escapades into dark rooms were never marked by panic and, fortunately, given my age, but by good-natured laughter, from memory, as Popeye. Robin Williams and the Adventures of the Famous Beetle. along with andWe were clearly climbing the film ladder, moving from basic family entertainment to much deeper and more ambitious work.
Amazed, stunned, appalled… and terrified!
I was excited like a flea about the idea of discovering an extraterrestrial film, but I did not expect that, on the one hand, I would be so amazed, I would be shocked by this full-fledged emotion and poetry. And on the other hand, this is the subject of this article to scare you to tears! A scene that scared the hell out of me and ? The one where little Elliot discovers a creature… in a cornfield.
You can watch the famous scene below:
If the scene in the cornfield is forever etched in my memory as a moviegoer, it is undoubtedly because it is full of suspense, it ends with a huge shock. Those few brilliantly staged minutes where Elliot tries to see the strange visitor using his flashlight before suddenly finding him blinded by the light and terrified are unforgettable for me.
In this sequence, the sacred doors of the seventh art really opened before me when I met a filmmaker who would occupy my days and nights for many years. So yes, I was very scared the first time I went to the movies and of the great Steven SpielbergBut undoubtedly it is partly from this fear that later my most beautiful emotions as a spectator were born.
