Summary
According to DIEESE, the minimum wage needed to support a family of 3 in July 2025 would be R$5,505.11.
The minimum wage to support a Brazilian family should be R$ 5,505.11 in July of this year, according to Patrícia Costa, supervisor of the DIEESE (Inter-union Department of Statistics and Economic Studies). The calculation refers to the cost of living considering a family of three, and was made at the request of the minutes.
Dieese has published an estimate of how much the minimum necessary wage (SMN) should be since the late 1970s. At that time, the reality of working families was different from what we live in today, Costa commented. The monthly estimate also takes into account the wages needed for a worker to support a family of 4. In this case, the minimum required would be R$6,802.88, which was the projection released by the agency for the month of July.
However, the average number of residents per family in Brazil is decreasing and, according to the latest population surveys, amounts to about 3 people. In 2010, the average was 3.31 and in 2022, 2.79, according to the census published by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
Therefore, the DIEESE is already studying a change in its methodology for estimating the minimum necessary: “Due to the decree establishing the basic food basket (Decree No. 11,936, of March 5, 2024), changes in the profile of families and the inclusion of the number of members of a family in the labor market, the DIEESE is studying a change in the methodology of the indicator,” said Costa.
Dieese’s projections must include methodological revisions from 2025 onwards: “Considering a family of two adults and one child, the SMN for July would be R$ 5,505.11 and not R$ 6,802.88, as indicated in the survey. But we are carrying out a broader study on the SMN parameters”, concluded Costa, head of the National Food Basket Survey (PNCBA).
Even reducing it to the bare minimum, the value is still far from the general reality of Brazilians. According to IBGE, in 2023, the average income per Brazilian resident was R$ 1,893.00. So, adding this average income for two adults, the result would be R$ 3,786.00.
