According to Francis Ford Coppola, several members of the Megalopolis cast had scheduling problems during the pre-production phase.
One of the greatest directors in the history of Hollywoodknown for films such as The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), Francis Ford Coppola will soon launch the next project in his career: Megalopoliswhich had no time to be rehearsed.
During an interview with IndieWirethe filmmaker explained how some of the cast members, such as Adam Driverwho plays the protagonist, were absent for much of the pre-production due to commitments to other projects.
“I had an extraordinary cast, but many of them couldn’t be there from the beginning, so I couldn’t rehearse with them. I gave each actor a stand-in, and if an actor couldn’t be there, I rehearsed with the stand-in,” he said.
Finally, Francis Ford Coppola explained that, despite resorting to this method of working, by using a stand-in, “a lot of good things came out of it and benefited the film.” In an interview with Rolling Stone USAthe director gave more details about this dynamic
“I did a strange thing with Megalopolis because I could only rehearse with about a third of the cast, maybe a little more. I had Aubrey Plaza. I had Nathalie Emmanuel. I didn’t have Adam,” he recalled. “But I had given everyone understudies like it was a play and I said, ‘What I’m going to do is do the rehearsal and for the actors I don’t have, I’m going to use understudies.'”
“It was a very creative and interesting week of rehearsals. You could see the actors finding their characters. Shia [LaBeouf] really liked it,” he continued Coppola. I had no experience working with him before this, but he deliberately creates tension between himself and the director to an extreme degree.”
He reminds me Dennis Hopperwho would do something similar, and then you would say, ‘Go do something,’ and then they would go out and do something brilliant.
What is the story of Megalopolis?
In the film, the city of Nova Roma is the scene of an epic conflict between Caesar Catiline (Adam Driver), a brilliant artist in favor of a utopian and idealistic future, and his opponent, the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito, Kaleidoscope).
Between the two is Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel, Fast & Furious 10), with loyalty divided between his father, Franklynand her beloved, Caesartrying to decide what future humanity deserves.
Written and directed by Coppola, Megalopolis It took forty years to finally reach movie theaters. The idea for the film came about in the 1980s, but the filmmaker was unable to secure funding to make the film at the time and ended up selling some of his properties to get the story off the ground.

Megalopolis — which still has Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man), Shia Labeouf (The Peanut Butter Falcon), Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City), Laurence Fishburne (John Wick 4: Baba Yaga), Jon Voight (Ray Donovan) and Forest Whitaker (The Butler of the White House) — premieres in October 31st in Brazilian cinemas.
