Since 2009, James Cameron’s work has mainly consisted of the Avatar saga, which, if all goes well, will conclude in 2031 with the release of the fifth and final installment.
But the director intends to ensure that the next few years of his career are not just about that: term announces that it has acquired the rights to two non-fiction books by Charles Pellegrino, “The Last Train From Hiroshima” (published in 2015) and “Ghosts of Hiroshima” (Expected in 2025, the 80th anniversary of the atomic bomb being dropped on a Japanese city).
Two works that will be combined into one film called The Last Train from Hiroshima. which tells the true story of a Japanese man who survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 during World War II. and went by train to Nagasaki, where he did the same thing with the second explosion.
A sure-to-be gripping historical drama in which James Cameron revisits his fear of nuclear power seen in the Terminator saga. “This is a topic I wanted to dedicate a film to and I’ve been trying to do it for years”he tells Deadline.
“A few days before he died, I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was in the hospital. He handed us the baton of his personal story, so I have to do it. I can’t ‘turn’. Away from him.’
It remains to be seen when he will be able to do so, and he says he will have to wait until Avatar’s production schedule allows for it. Will we have to wait until the release of the saga’s fifth opus in 2031?
