‘It’s not going to happen’: Guillermo del Toro’s powerful speech about artificial intelligence

An outstanding director and true craftsman of cinema, Guillermo del Toro regularly explores artificial intelligence, a major topic that worries many filmmakers and audiences alike.

“If someone wants an AI movie, give it to me right now. I don’t care about people who want to get a quick gratification from something stupid.”It was announced at the recent Toronto festival by a man who recently put all his patience into sculpting and making an animated Pinocchio with his own hands.

Invited by the BFI to a Q&A sessionGuillermo del Toro has confirmed his position once again in recent days.

“Semi-convincing screensavers.”

“Artificial intelligence has shown that it can create semi-convincing screensavers. Essentially it is.”he said.

“I think the value of art lies not in how much it costs and how little effort it requires, but in what one is willing to risk to achieve it. What would you do to find yourself in front of a starry night? (Vincent Van Gogh) in the Orsay Museum. will you go to paris Yes. Are you waiting in line for 3 hours? Yes. And there you will be transferred to a monument for 5 minutes. But how much will people be willing to pay for these screensavers? Will they be able to cry because they have lost a child, a mother, or because they have wasted their youth? Of course not.”

“It’s not going to happen.”

Reiterating that artificial intelligence is first and foremost a tool to be used with care and that its use is crucial, Guillermo del Toro does not seem catastrophic that this new technology will replace art:

“It won’t happen, but it will take us years to find out, and in the meantime, is in the hands of people who see it not as a tool but as a solution. It’s like asking a wrench to build a garage. It is impossible. (…) It’s a tool that shouldn’t be in anyone’s hands, but in the hands of artists, and even then, at will.”
