Trailer for Esther 2: Origins of the dreaded killer in the chapter

After leaving audiences reeling when it hit theaters in 2009, Esther is back for a film about her origins… Isabelle Fuhrman, now 25, takes on the role of the little girl.

After traumatizing 640,000 viewers in French cinemas in 2009, the terrifying Esther is back in cinemas in a film about the origin of the character, still played by Isabelle Fuhrman.

Directed by William Brent Bell (already at the helm of horror The Boy 2 ), Esther 2: Origins takes place before Jaume Collet-Serrat’s film.

After orchestrating a brilliant escape from a mental institution, Esther travels to America posing as the lost daughter of a wealthy family. But faced with a mother who is willing to do anything to protect her family, her plan takes an unexpected turn.

In the original feature film, a 9-year-old orphan was adopted by an American couple. Very quickly, Kate’s mother (Vera Farmiga) discovers the hidden face of the little girl, who turns out to be a 33-year-old woman suffering from a rare hormonal disorder that has stunted her growth.

Hence, The Origins tells the story of Esther before she meets Kate and John Coleman, but it’s Isabelle Fuhrman who takes on the role that made her famous. Which means the actor will have to look even younger than he did in the 2009 feature film.

When the project was announced, the latter specified that he was taking the role without resorting to computer graphics for his age. The production uses only make-up and the director filmed the actor in forced perspective, a visual process intended to create an impression of depth. The child actor also voiced for wide shots.

I know how we did it. I know everything and I’m completely overwhelmed because somehow I’m nine again and it doesn’t make sense.“, he told later HollywoodReporter.

I love the challenge of playing a kid because it’s never been in a movie without special effects. (…) It seems impossible to resume the role played in childhood. But we did, and I think that’s what makes the movie work, because it’s hard to understand how I manage to look like a 9-year-old. It’s really scaryT”.

And the bet seems to be paying off, as Isabelle Fuhrman hasn’t aged in the trailer released today.

Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Matthew Finlan and Hiro Kanagawa also star in the prequel, which hits theaters on August 17.
