The governor of Pará was supposed to attend an inauguration, but smoke obscured the visibility of the flight and the plane had to make an emergency landing.
The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), had to make an emergency landing on the night of Wednesday 18, due to smoke from fires that broke out in the state. Barbalho’s flight left Irituia, east of the capital Belém, towards São Caetano de Odivelas, but had to land in Santa Maria do Pará.
On his social networks, the governor spoke about the incident and apologized to the residents of Odivelas for not attending the inauguration of the city’s new waterfront.
On August 31, Barbalho had to make another emergency landing. At the time, the plane was going from Cametá to Tucuruí and made a forced landing once it reached the second city. The governor’s son was also on board. In this case, the reason for the landing was simply described as an accident; in both cases, no one was injured.

Belém will host the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in November 2025. The event will discuss climate change and ways to solve it, or at least mitigate its effects. The federal government expects more than 40,000 people to attend the conference.
