BRT crash leaves more than 60 injured in Rio


Articulated bus collides with pillar on Avenida Brasil; no deaths reported




An articulated BRT bus collided with one of the pylons of the Elevado do Gasólogo on Avenida Brasil, in Rio de Janeiro, early Saturday morning, 21. The accident injured at least 64 people, according to the State Department of Health, with no deaths reported.

Of these victims, 57 were taken to the relevant hospital departments, while seven required treatment only at the scene of the accident.

According to the state government, preliminary information indicates that the driver of the vehicle “suddenly became ill and collided with a concrete structure on the viaduct.”

The accident occurred on Rua Santos Lima, towards the center, near the Jamil Haddad National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (Into).

The BRT corridor and a side lane were closed to treat the injured. The lane was reopened in the morning, but the BRT lane remains without service.

According to the Rio Operations Center, an operational diversion has been implemented on the stretch, while the Gentileza BRT station is closed in the central direction, according to Mobi-Rio. (*With information from Estadão Conteúdo)
