Twenty-four years after the release of the original, Gladiator is becoming a franchise. Ridley Scott is preparing to present to the world the sequel to his classic with Russell Crowe without Russell Crowe, as this time Paul Mescal (Normal People) plays the lead role of Lucius. The filmmaker, who is confident in the continuation of his film, is already talking about… the third part.
In an interview for a French magazine firstThe director of Alien and Blade Runner states:I’m already toying with the idea of Gladiator 3! No, really! I lit the fuse!“In the rest of his statement, Ridley Scott reveals a little more:”The ending of Gladiator II is reminiscent of The Godfather, where Michael Corleone finds himself in a place he doesn’t want and asks himself, “Now, father, what shall I do?“
“The next one will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is in life“, he continues. If the director’s words are to be believed, the character played by Paul Mescal should survive the end of the second film, but the existence of Gladiator 3 will depend entirely on the success of the sequel.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Anyway, Ridley Scott seems confident in the quality of the second part. in the interview Empirehe says:This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The director is particularly vocal about the opening scene, which he describes as “One of the greatest action sequences ever created“.”Probably bigger than anything you’ve ever seen Napoleon.“
This opening sequence is supposed to indicate a meeting between a gladiator and a rhinoceros. The promise of a spectacular scene is enough. Gladiator 2 will star Paul Mescall alongside Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen and Joseph Quinn – revealed in Stranger Things season 4.
The synopsis of the sequel reads: “Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius is forced into the Colosseum when his country is overrun by the tyrannical emperors who now rule Rome with an iron fist. With rage at heart and the future of the empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find the strength and honor to restore Rome to its people..”
