One of India’s biggest Bollywood directors, Ram Gopal Varma, has announced that he will start working exclusively with AI to compose soundtracks for his productions. The justification is that musicians do not capture the essence of the works, do not meet deadlines and make the process expensive.
The replacement will be conducted by the director’s new company, RGV Den Musicwhich uses AI applications like Udio and Sono to create the compositions. In an interview with the site TechCrunchVarma said the songs will be protected by encryption developed by startups.
“Musicians, composers, lyricists and singers will be greatly affected and will disappear completely in the near future as applications are developed at a rapid pace,” he said. According to Varma, human errors have increased production expenses, while AI provides what is needed instantly, without any cost.
The director is known for popular Indian films like “Company”, “Rangeela”, “Sarkar” and “Satya”, and he plans to debut the new AI-generated soundtrack format in his feature film “Saaree”, which is slated for release in November.
Artificial Intelligence in Cinema is Not a Consensus
In Hollywood, in the United States, however, director Christopher Nolan has already expressed concern about artificial intelligence. In an interview with the magazine WiredThe maker said the apps could be dangerous if used by companies that want to avoid liability for certain situations. Nolan also argued that AI cannot replace the artistic intuition of humans.
Varma’s announcement is expected to have a major impact on the world’s largest film industry, as Bollywood produces between 20,000 and 25,000 songs a year in India. According to him, other Indian filmmakers are keen on the idea of embracing AI and are not resistant to the advancement of technology.
