This is the series everyone is talking about right now. For better or for worse. Because one thing’s for sure, Menendez-centric Monsters Season 2 is here to get people to react and think.
Examining the story of Eric and Lyle, two brothers accused of murdering their parents, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, ask the crucial question: Who are the real monsters in this case?
And throughout the season, the writers have been challenging him, with more or less success (and a lot of awkwardness).
If Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Eric Menendez is currently the most-watched series on Netflix, subscribers are far less lenient with it than they were with Dahmer, which came out two years earlier.
The latter not only created a surprise, but also perfectly corresponded to the idea that the audience had of the monster: a bloodthirsty and unhealthy serial killer.
Today, viewers are still debating the issue, as evidenced by the comments on AlloCiné’s page. Averaging a 3.6/5 that continues to climb, Monsters Season 2 is still far from Dahmer (4/5). And, without any surprise, it should not be exceeded.
“It takes thought”
“I read some disappointing comments about Dahmer. Indeed, we are not here for the morbid curiosity that we all have for more or less psychopathic serial killers and pictures of absolute horror.
So, yes, obviously, it requires a step back, a reflection, and I’m quite shocked that viewers give bad reviews: frustrated that they can’t see the absolute horror in the picture… and unable to reflect and question to his own humanity”. (hysteria)
“Too long for what it says and below Dahmer on S1. The excess of accusations against the parents and especially the father is painful.” (ice and fire)
“Overall a good series about the journey of the 2 Menendez brothers… but obviously less good than the series about Dahmer… The series is interesting because it plays on the uncertainty of the 2 brothers, about whom we never know if they are lying or telling the truth… Hopefully the next one will be bigger on fish…” (Dx M.)
“This series is still crazy, I find it as original and cold as Dahmer’s first season. I find this story difficult, the themes covered are dark. It’s a stark contrast to Dahmer’s co-star Evan Peters, who was a true horror star from Season 1 of American Horror Story.
These two new actors are playing the roles really well, I would have given the role of Dahmer to two actors.” (Julien L)
“The Menendez case isn’t as sensationalized and heinous as Dahmer’s, but it’s no less complex and unhealthy, and the concept of the monster this season has been constantly framed through the lens of this parricide and the sexual abuse that follows it.” (released)
“We are light years away from Dahmer’s first season to make the most of the season. (Clint B)
If Netflix took all the risks with this Season 2, Season 3 will have to re-align everyone. The platform announced some time ago that it will focus on Ed Gein, a serial killer who is especially famous in the United States and who inspired the characters of the film.
And it was Charlie Hunnam who was chosen to bring his story to the screen.
