Partizan Belgrade coach suffers cuts to his face after confusion and defeat against Red Star

Considered the greatest Serbian classic and one of the greatest in the world, the match between Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade ended with great confusion in the stands and dragged into the locker rooms of the Partizan stadium in Belgrade, the Serbian capital. The home team suffered a 4-0 defeat to Red Star and the result sparked outrage among the fans.

The club’s coach, Aleksandar Stanojevic, showed up at the post-match press conference with bandages on his face after suffering cuts during the melee. According to the coach, the injuries were not caused by a direct attack on him, but by shards of glass broken by Partizan fans at the entrance to the dressing room.

“I’m sorry I came to the press conference with these bandages. If the match had been 0-0 I wouldn’t have come. But I have to come. I don’t want to seem like the only one who runs away. I was hit by a glass in the dressing room, I ended up hurting myself, but it’s not a tragedy,” Stanojevic said at the opening of the press conference.

This was the the biggest defeat in the history of the classic applied by a visitor to their rival’s home. Away from home, Partizan managed just two goals against Estrela.

And in addition to the defeat in the classic, the anger of the Partizan Belgrade fans was caused by the bad phase that the team is going through in the national competition. The biggest champion of the national championship with 16 cups, is currently in ninth place with eleven points, while Red Star leads the standings with 22 points and is so far undefeated in the competition. The team has 15 national titles.

Partizan have not beaten Estrela in four games, since December 2023, when they won 2-1 in the Serbian championship. Since then, there have been three victories for the opponent and one draw. In recent years, Partizan have seen their best players add six consecutive titles to the list, significantly reducing the difference in titles between the two. Among the six consecutive seasons, Estrela Vermelha have won two editions with more than 100 points added to the standings.
