‘Monsters’: Did Lyle wear a wig because his father forced him to, or is it an invention of the Netflix series?

“Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez”, the new Netflix series based on a true crime, has become one of the most popular content on Netflix because of the way it tells the story of the murder of José and Kitty Menendez.

Did Lyle Menéndez wear a wig? The truth behind the scene of the Netflix series “Monsters”.

The plot, in addition to detailing how the brothers planned their parents’ deaths, also reveals details few knew about the characters, and one of the most talked about aspects of the show is the portrayal of Lyle Menéndez, who, in fiction, appears wearing a wig. Which has made many wonder if this detail was a creative invention or if it was actually a part of his life. We explain to you.

At one point in the series, José, Kitty and Lyle are seen arguing because he wants to marry his girlfriend. They categorically forbid it, as they assure that the girl is not from society and is too young to do it. In her rage, Lyle calls her mother a hypocrite, claiming that she got married when she was 20.

This infuriates her to the point where she tears off his wig, revealing his almost completely bald head. Frustrated, Erik’s brother asks him how long he’s been using it, having no idea, to reveal that he’s been suffering from hair loss for a while, and his father suggested he get a hairdresser.

Lyle Menéndez stated that he suffered from baldness and was forced to wear a toupee

According to the portal “USA Today”, in real life it turns out that Lyle was wearing a wig, which is why it is a detail that was faithfully depicted on the small screen. He himself admitted this during his trials when he reported that he started losing his hair at the age of 14, which led him to use a wig to hide his baldness.

It was his father, José Menéndez, who suggested the use of a toupee, as he argued that having hair was vital to succeed in university and later as a businessman. The wigs were rumored to be worth around $1,450 and Lyle had several pieces.

Once arrested, Lyle had to remove his toupee as they were not allowed inside the prison. This is why police photos show him with a bald head, although he was allowed to wear it when attending his hearings.

Finally, on the stand, Lyle mentioned that a few days before he murdered his parents he had a fight with them that revolved around his wig, which left him very embarrassed for a specific reason.

“It must have had something to do with my wig at some point. She was out of control, flailing her arms and screaming. She reached out, grabbed my wig and just tore it off.”

By incorporating this small detail into the series, Netflix gives viewers a glimpse into the alleged abuse the Menéndez brothers experienced and how that was some of the motivation behind their plan to murder their parents.
