Embraer says South Africa is negotiating C-390 freighter purchase

South Africa has advanced talks over a possible purchase of Embraer’s C-390 Millennium freighter, the Brazilian planemaker said on Wednesday, after presenting the military cargo plane to the African country for the second time.

The company expressed optimism about the pending sale, as South African authorities said they were making progress in “steps toward selecting the much-needed aircraft” for its national defense force, Embraer said in a statement.

The Brazilian company did not specify how many merchant ships it might sell to South Africa or what stage the process was at.

A potential deal represents the first sale of the C-390 to an African country. To date, the aircraft has already been purchased by Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, the Netherlands and South Korea.

The aircraft, which competes with Lockheed Martin’s C-130, “is perfectly suited to replace the older aircraft currently in service in South Africa,” Embraer said.

The Brazilian company presented the C-390 to President Cyril Ramaphosa and Defence Minister Angie Motshekga at the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition held earlier this month at Waterkloof Air Base.
