The Minister is responsible for the processes in this matter. Wanted, STF did not respond
The Joint Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) protested on Tuesday night 24th in New York against the law of time frame and calling for action against the climate crisis “caused by the action of economic and political power.” APIB projected images on a building with messages in English and Portuguese calling for the delimitation of indigenous lands and that the Minister of Supreme Federal Court (STF), Gilmar Mendessuspend the law passed by Congress. When contacted, the STF did not respond.
Gilmar Mendes is the rapporteur of the legal actions regarding the timing. The legislation establishes that only the territories occupied by indigenous peoples until the date of promulgation of the Federal ConstitutionOn April 5, 1988, they can be officially designated as reserves. Congress approved the measure in September 2023, in disagreement with the STF, which considered the thesis unconstitutional..
APIB asked the minister to suspend the law, but Mendes created a conciliation chamber to hold public hearings on the issue. “APIB has withdrawn from the “Conciliation Chamber” for understanding that the rights of indigenous peoples, already guaranteed by the 1988 Constitution, cannot be the subject of negotiation. The movement also questions the inequality in the representation of the process, since the majority of representatives defend the interests of ruralists”, the association stated on its social networks.
The projections read “Gilmar Mendes, suspend the law of the Time Frame,” “The future is indigenous,” “In a world on fire, we are the rain,” and other messages. The projections were made at The New Yorker hotel, a classic city skyline in the Hells’s Kitchen neighborhood.
