At an “Estadão” event, leaders discuss the sector’s challenges just over a year ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 30 (COP-30), in Belém
Building on initiatives such as reusing materials and designing more durable products, the Brazilian industry can play an important role in energy transitionchampioned industry leaders ESG Summit 2024this Thursday 26th, at the B32 Theater, in Sao Paulo.
The topic was discussed in the brand talk on the challenges of the domestic industry operating in Amazon just over a year before the United Nations Climate Change Conference 30 (COP-30), in Belém, in November 2025. The mediation was by the journalist Eduardo Geraque.
The executive president of the Brazilian Aluminum Association (Abal), Janaina Donas, argued that the Belém COP could be an opportunity to discuss climate issues without dissociating them from economic and social development. “To show what we are doing and bring important reflections”, she underlined.
He also defended the circular economy as part of the sector’s decarbonisation journey and said that the country is a global reference in the reuse of aluminium.
Over the past 15 years, approximately 95% of cans containing this material have subsequently been recycled in the country. “This is a reflection of the industry’s investments,” explained the Abal representative.

For her, the industry also has the role of building resilience. “It has to be part of the solutions,” she said. “We cannot simply wait for government action, which presents its own challenges.”
The president of the Brazilian Association of Large Consumers and Free Consumers of Energy (Abrace Energia), Paulo Pedrosa, defended a new federal position on energy policy, even if it initially involves an increase in emissions. “It’s a difficult situation,” he admitted, defining the current one as an “anti-energy industrial policy.”

He mentioned the possibility of incentives to promote the adoption of low-cost renewable energy, with particular attention to a major program of electrification of industrial processes, in order to replace the current use of fossil fuels. “Harness the clean energy potential of Brazil,” she said.
On the same panel, Rodolfo Zamian Danilow, senior government relations advisor at Hydro Brasil, spoke about how the company has sought local solutions for the energy transition. An example is a study conducted in collaboration with a university in Pará (where it operates) on the use of açaí seeds as biomass.

“It is a residue from the production of açaí after the pulp has been extracted,” he explained. You also highlighted other measures. “COP-30 in the Amazon region is an opportune moment to showcase concrete examples of economic and energy development,” she said. “It will be a very important event for the country.”
