Throughout the plot, the saga Star Wars addresses various discussions about politics and society. Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance These are just a few examples of “factions” that are part of the plot and divide fans around the world.

A game set in the universe of Star Wars revealed interesting details about how each country sees both sides of the story.

Star Wars Commander is a strategy and management game released in 2014. At the beginning of the campaign, players need to choose whether they want to command the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire.

When the game reached the 5 million player mark, the developers published an infographic that demonstrates the choices made by the majority of fans in each location.

The infographic showed that, in most cases, players from countries in the global South tend to choose Rebels – marked on the map in shades of yellow.

This is the case of Brazil, which appears with around 55% of players choosing to defend the team of Luke Skywalker and co.

The list of countries most aligned with Rebels is led by Africans, with Somalia, Ethiopia, Mali and Angola recording more than 65%.

On the other hand, countries in the global North tend to choose the Empire – marked in shades of blue. Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia lead with almost 60% identification with the forces of Darth Vader.

The United States also has a preference for Empire and Europe is divided, with the East of the continent more marked in blue. China appears in gray because the game is not available in the country.

Politics in Star Wars

The director himself George Lucas commented that political disputes play a central role in the plot.

“It’s not science and aliens and all that kind of stuff that interests me. It’s how people react to all these things”, he said while participating in the program Story of Science Fiction of James Cameron.

He also explained that the saga Star Wars is inspired by true stories of rebellions that overcame powerful forces.

We were fighting the greatest empire in the world and we were just hillbillies in coonskin hats,” said George Lucas referring to the United States’ independence from the British Empire.

At another point, he comments on how, during the Vietnam War, the United States occupied this powerful place.

The irony is that, in both cases, the little ones won. The highly technical empires, both the British and the American, lost. That was the main point.”
