Rubens Ometto, president of Cosan’s board of directors, surpassed the record of 2018, when he spent R$7.5 million in donations
The largest donor in the 2024 municipal elections is the billionaire Rubens Omettopresident of the board of directors of Cosanwith R$ 15.7 million donated until this Friday, the 27th. The previous record for private donations was his, with R$ 7.5 million donated in the 2018 elections. Asked to comment on the figure, Ometto did not respond to attempted contact.
Among the billionaire’s donations, the largest was R$ 2 million to the mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman (PSD), who is seeking re-election. The lowest value was R $ 740, donated to the state directory of We can?in Parana. The same directory would later receive another R$3,940 from the businessman.
So far, unlike what he did in previous years, Ometto has not made any donations to the candidates for mayor of São Paulo.
In municipal elections, 93 cities will have candidates who received donations from Cosan’s founder. There were transfers to the party lists of PL, MDB, PP, PSD, PSDB, União Brasil, Podemos, PSB and PDT. Of the sum donated so far by the entrepreneur, 59 transfers have been made to mayoral candidates and 97 to city councilors, for a total of 156 applications.
Little man has no party preferences nor does he choose between left and right to open his wallet. The entrepreneur’s donations, in total, included candidates from 17 of the 35 registered parties in Brazil, including right-wing acronyms such as PL and Novo and left-wing groups such as PT and PSB.
The fortune of Cosan’s founder is estimated by the magazine at R$8.03 billion Forbes.
