Learn how hypertension and anxiety are interconnected

Although distinct, these health conditions are related and can affect the well-being of the body.

High blood pressure, also called high blood pressure, and anxiety are distinct health conditions, but they are often interconnected and can have a significant impact on well-being. Therefore, it is essential that these problems are addressed in an integrated way, to improve physical and emotional health.

Hypertension is a chronic disease characterized by an increase in blood pressure in the arteries, which can cause serious cardiovascular problems, such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure, as explained by the coordinator of the Biomedicine course at the Faculdade Anhanguera, Reginaldo Tavares Franquez.

On the other hand, anxiety is an emotional response to various conditions of human behavior, including distress, distress, uncertainty, feelings of danger and insecurity. However, these conditions may be deeply connected. Chronic anxiety can trigger physiological responses that temporarily increase blood pressure, while hypertension can intensify anxiety symptoms, creating a vicious cycle.

Symptoms of hypertension and anxiety

Identify whether the hypertension is emotional or caused by other factors requires attention. Sometimes this disease has no symptoms, but, according to Reginaldo Tavares Franquez, some patients may experience headaches, dizziness, blurred vision and heart palpitations.

Anxiety, in turn, can cause agitation, sweating, tremors, irritability and difficulty sleeping. However, in some people, when it is intense, it can temporarily increase blood pressure, making it difficult to identify the root cause.

Diagnosis high blood pressure and anxiety

To identify hypertension and anxiety, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional. “For a correct diagnosis of hypertension and anxiety, specialized monitoring is essential. Doctors and pharmacists are professionals trained to help in this treatment process, monitoring blood pressure throughout the day, even in moments of stress or anxiety, to identify possible connections”, warns the professor.

Additional tests, such as ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and blood pressure tests stress, can evaluate the influence of emotions on blood pressure. Additionally, psychological evaluation can provide insights on the relationship between anxiety and high blood pressure, as explained by Reginaldo Tavares Franquez.

In addition to a healthy diet, the treatment of hypertension also includes regular exercise.

Treatment of high blood pressure

High blood pressure often results from a combination of genetic, behavioral and environmental factors. Treatment must be guided by healthcare professionals, considering both clinical and emotional aspects. Reginaldo Tavares Franquez emphasizes that lifestyle changes, such as a balanced diet, regular physical activity and stress reduction, are essential. In some cases, medications may be needed.

“Effective treatment of anxiety-related hypertension involves an integrated approach. In addition to lifestyle changes, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help manage anxiety anxiety, promote healthier thought and behavior patterns. Drugs can be indicated according to the doctor’s opinion”, explains the professor.

Stress and anxiety control

Stress and anxiety can affect blood pressure levels in several ways, such as activation of the sympathetic nervous system, contraction of blood vessels, release of stress hormones, sodium and water retention, unhealthy eating habits and lack of adequate sleep. Therefore, controlling them through relaxation and therapeutic techniques is important to prevent or control hypertension.

Reginaldo Tavares Franquez warns that untreated hypertension can lead to serious complications, such as cardiovascular diseases and organ damage. “Seeking an early diagnosis and adequate treatment is essential to improve the quality of life,” he concludes.
