An unknown man approaches the village. He immediately notices that he is not welcome. Some guys attack him as soon as he arrives and he kills them without any fuss. As such, he is drawn into the rivalry between the Baxters and Rhodes, two families fighting for control of a small town.

You’ve recognized the movie, it’s A Fistful of Dollars, a Western starring Clint Eastwood. Released in Italy in 1964 and only in France in 1966 (just a few months before its “sequel” came out and for a few more dollars), this movie changed the way cowboys were portrayed on the big screen.

For a Fistful of Dollars is directed by Sergio Leone, who signs his second solo film after the epic Colossus of Rhodes. Shot in Spain for exteriors and studio scenes in Italy, this western shook up the history of the genre in more ways than one by offering audiences an entertaining, violent and caustic film!

Very unshaven characters, sweaty faces, anti-heroes, dark humor, cynicism, graphic violence, well-felt dialogue and, on the production side, lots of close-ups or “revolver shots” (the gun, its shot and its victim in the same image): Leone shakes up the genre that It was in a gentle slumber, played by aging Hollywood stars, who are fighting to give it new life.

Clint Eastwood, cigar in mouth and poncho over shoulders, becomes instantly recognizable and his outfit legendary. He’ll also use it for a few more bucks and the same Leone’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” finale.
