The side effect of slimming pens can be hair loss
Summary
The use of weight loss medications can trigger hair loss due to calorie restriction and nutritional deficiencies.
With the success of the slimming pens in losing weight, many people have reported on social media a reaction that is not described in the package leaflet, but which may appear: hair loss.
“There are several factors that can contribute to hair loss while using Ozempic for weight loss. Among these, metabolic changes must be considered, such as changes in insulin levels, which can interrupt the hair growth cycle, in addition to the nutritional deficit resulting from a low-calorie diet”, says Danilo S. Talarico, doctor graduated from PUC – Campinas and professor at the Instituto Lapidares on Trichology and Hair Transplant courses.
“Nutritional changes, vitamin deficiencies, lack of proteins and hormonal variations are also responsible for this effect,” adds the doctor.
According to Lilian Brasileiro, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, slimming diets can always cause falls.
“Simply having a caloric depression, which is necessary for weight loss, can be an insult to the hair follicle. We have seen this often, since we are in the era of injections similar to GLP 1 for rapid and intense weight loss and, finally, of bariatrics, of malnutrition itself such as those of vitamins and minerals, such as iron and zinc most commonly,” he explains Lillian.
“When slimming diets are not well structured, they cut or limit important macronutrients such as proteins, they leave out the variety of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and they reduce calories too much, the consequence is, in fact, hair loss,” explains the nutritionist Marcella Garcez, director and professor at the Brazilian Association of Nutrology (ABRAN).
“No one wants to lose their hair while losing weight, but it can happen. About 85% of hair is made up of keratin, which is a protein. This is one of the reasons why consuming this macronutrient is so important for hair health. Hair is an excretory tissue, made up of reserve amino acids for this function. Proteins are made up of a set of amino acids and if there are no excess amino acids in the diet, good keratin synthesis is not achieved,” explains the nutritionist.
How to preserve your hair during the diet
• Pay attention to restrictions and eat well – Without a negative energy balance, weight loss will not occur, so you will have to eat less than you spend. And that’s what Ozempic helps you do. “However, the more restrictive the diet, the greater the likelihood of a deficiency of amino acids, vitamins and minerals important for hair health,” says Marcella.
In other words, if you abuse the calorie deficit, limit food groups, offer few nutrients to the body, your hair is likely to suffer the consequences. “To have a good, healthy and long-lasting result, without disastrous consequences for skin and hair, the calorie deficit must be achieved with guidance, through food planning, reading labels and making good choices,” advises Marcella.
The diet must be sustainable, favoring healthy foods, rich in proteins, fiber and good fats, and avoiding ultra-processed foods, rich in sugar and sodium.
• Ensure the ideal amount of protein – The nutritionist explains that, in slimming diets, proteins must be present in adequate quantities so that damage to structures such as hair does not occur.
“Meat, fish, poultry and dairy products are the main sources of protein and contain essential amino acids, i.e. those that the body cannot produce. Proteins of animal origin have a high biological value, i.e. they contain the nine essential amino acids (tryptophan, phenylalanine, leucine, valine, isoleucine, lysine, threonine, methionine and histidine). In the case of plant sources, it is necessary to combine them to guarantee essential amino acids”, explains the nutritionist.
Daily protein consumption must be individualized and specific, taking into account: age, sex, physical activity, profession, health status and personal goals of the person. The daily requirement can vary from 0.6 to 2 g per kilogram per day.
“In general, those following weight loss diets and bodybuilding should consume 2 g/kg per day. In other words, a person weighing 100 kg can consume 60 to 200 g of protein per day,” explains the doctor. “To correct any deficiencies, the use of supplements, such as whey proteins, may be recommended,” explains Dr. Danilo Talarico.
• Keep an eye on iron and zinc – In addition to proteins, another point to consider in slimming diets is the consumption of iron and zinc. “A low consumption of meat and vegetables, sources of iron, can promote hair loss,” explains the nutritionist.
Iron is present in many plant foods, however its absorption is much lower when it comes from these sources. Animal iron is absorbed up to five times more, as it is bound to proteins.
Danilo finally explains that this phenomenon of hair loss induced by weight loss is known as telogen effluvium. Since it is an adaptation process of the body, hair loss should have a temporary effect and resolve, in most cases, by correcting the cause.
“In a few months the body has to adapt and grow hair again. It is important that patients respect this time and are aware of possible nutritional deficiencies that may arise during treatment. If the symptoms persist for long periods it is advisable to consult a professional”, concludes the doctor.
