The statement was released by the Italian Deputy Prime Minister during an event
The Italian government said on Wednesday (2) that it is “ready” to take any necessary decision to ensure the safety of its citizens in Lebanon and is working to increase repatriation flights.
This was stated by the deputy prime minister and chancellor of the Republic, Antonio Tajani, before the Foreign Relations and Defense commissions of the Chamber and Senate, in the context of the worsening of tension over the war in the Middle East.
“We are ready to take every initiative to guarantee the safety of our compatriots”, he declared, recalling that “for some time” he has been asking all Italian citizens to leave Lebanon on available commercial flights.
According to Tajani, the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is working to satisfy the requests [dos cidadãos] through an increase in connections, including charter flights and other means that are being examined together with the Minister of Defense”, Guido Crosetto.
The chancellor also noted that there are currently around 3,200 Italians in Lebanon, most of whom have dual citizenship.
In turn, Crosetto stressed that rapid and effective action by the United Nations is needed for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon to truly begin to act.
“We point out the need for rapid and incisive action by the UN so that Unifil can exercise a real deterrent to the use of force, contemplating the possibility of operating autonomously, even without the Lebanese forces”, noted the minister of the Italian Defense, adding that “either there are UN forces in southern Lebanon or Israeli soldiers and the difference is clear to everyone.”
Crosetto also said that Italy is ready to evacuate Italians from Lebanon if necessary, and added that “the level of risk for our military has not increased because they are not targets of direct attacks.”
“However, the situation is very difficult and worrying due to the possibility of unwanted incidents occurring which cannot be ruled out,” he concluded.
Italy has more than a thousand soldiers in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, for a total of nearly 10,500 troops.
