Six Fluminense players are in the last three months of their contracts with the club, with no guarantee of renewal for now.
After a somewhat chaotic month of September for Fluminense, between eliminations in the Copa do Brasil and important defeats in the Brasileirão, the club enters October with some inevitable ‘concerns’: important players whose contracts are expiring.
With three months to go until the end of the year, the Tricolor das Laranjeiras has six players whose contracts are expiring: Marcelo, Felipe Melo, Manoel, Diogo Barbosa, Jan Lucumí, Marquinhos and Giovanni Ariaswhich will be negotiated according to the player’s wishes. All their contracts are close to expiring and, so far, there are no guarantees of renewal.
A few points stand out in this list. First of all, the presence of historic players and idols of the club, such as Marcelo and Felipe Melo, both without many opportunities this season, despite the full-back becoming increasingly familiar with Mano Menezes.
In addition to them, Manoel is a defender who has been important for the club at times (from 2021), despite having experienced a season with very few opportunities. With Mano it is difficult to think of stopping playing defense alongside Thiago Silva, thus being one of the last in priority.
As for Lucumí and Marquinhos, both arrived on loan, from Boca Junior de Cali (COL) and Arsenal respectively. Marquinhos had a great time at the start of the season under Fernando Diniz and was an absolute starter, but his injury put him out of action.
Unlike him, Lucumí has not received all the opportunities expected from such a young prospect, having only played 5 professional matches so far this year. With the contract expiring at the end of the year, things didn’t go as planned.
As for Arias, president Mário Bittencourt himself confirmed in a press conference this Tuesday (1), that the player’s dream has always been to play in Europe and that he will realize his wish, but only at the end of the year.
Furthermore, Mário thought that Arias wanted to leave in the summer, but he did not allow this to happen, because the proposal was not so pleasant and Fluminense needed the player for the rest of the season. This situation generated dissatisfaction on the part of the player.
The president confirmed that he will leave next season and added: “He will help us until the end of the year, then he will follow his path. Those who are Fluminense until the end are the fans, who will always be with the club.” – said Mario Bittencourt.
Finally, Diogo Barbosa is the name with the most opportunities and among these he is experiencing the best moment. With Diniz he was able to wait his turn and was Marcelo’s immediate replacement, but obviously without too many questions. With Mano he was a starter and performed well. He has been at the club since June 2023.
Fluminense (18th) returns to the pitch this Thursday (3rd), at 9.30pm, to face Cruzeiro (8th), in the Brasileirão, at the Maracanã. The Tricolore have had 3 consecutive defeats in the competition and are stuck in the relegation zone.
