This new Netflix series is a success all over the world but it is controversial

No one wants this to come to Netflix in a big way

Since its release on September 26, the series Nobody wants it on Netflix, a romantic comedy starring a rabbi (Adam Brody) and a podcaster specializing in sexuality (Kristen Bell), is a real success.

It is currently there second most watched series in the worldbehind Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez (so the case has just experienced a new twist). However, despite its popularity among audiences, it faces intense controversy regarding its depiction of Jewish culture.

The show, created by Erin Foster, quickly gained a wide audience thanks to its mix of humor and romance. However, several reviews highlighted the way the series portrays Jewish characters. Some viewers and critics have called Jewish female characters “stereotypical” and “dismissive”, fueling a debate over the portrayal of the Jewish community on screen.

Jessica Radloff, author and editor of Charmpublished an article in which he expressed his dissatisfaction with what he perceived as a caricature of Jewish women in the series. He particularly highlights a scene from the first episode in which the rabbi’s mother describes Kristen Bell’s character as a “shiksa,” a derogatory term for a non-Jewish woman. Radloff pointed out that these types of scenes reinforce harmful stereotypes at a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise.

Another article from Time magazine lamented the portrayal of Jewish women, describing them as “harpies and the true villains of the story”.

The creator of the series defends herself from criticism

Erin Foster, the creator of the series, responded to these criticisms in an interview with Los Angeles Times. He said his intention was to “shine a positive light on Jewish culture.” Foster, who converted to Judaism after her marriage, explained that she wanted to offer a more modern and nuanced view of that culture through his personal experience.

He also defended his choice of portrayal by pointing out that the main character, a young and “cool” marijuana-smoking rabbi, breaks the usual stereotypes about Jewish religious figures.

The creator added that whatever type of character she created would be subject to criticism, underlining the difficulty of representing an entire community through some fictional characters. He ultimately insisted that the series aims to include educational moments while remaining entertaining and not to reinforce negative stereotypes.
