For the analysts interviewed by Political broadcastGrupo Estado’s real-time news system, the current mayor and re-election candidate Ricardo Nunes (MDB) was the one who lost the debate promoted by TVGlobo Thursday evening, 3. Attacked by all the other candidates, the emedebista remained on the defensive during the meeting and lost importance to his main opponents, Guilherme Boulos (PSOL) and Pablo Marçal (PRTB).
The latest Datafolha poll released on Thursday afternoon shows a slight advantage for the psoloist with 26%. Nunes drops above the two-point error, from 27% to 24% and is numerically tied with the former coach, who grows from 21% to 24%.
In this sense, the mayor had to demonstrate confidence in defending his management in the face of questions from competitors. However, according to political scientist and professor Carlos Melo, of the Insper Public Policy Center, the emedebista remained cornered and apathetic.
“The one who lost was Ricardo Nunes, who always had to remain on the defensive and was even ignored at several moments. He lacked brilliance,” Melo said. “Regarding those who lost, Marçal was forced to be what he never was throughout the season because of the rejection. Who knows if it wouldn’t be too late,” he reflected.
According to the poll, the former coach has the highest rejection rate among Anhangabaú Palace candidates, with 53% of São Paulo residents who would not vote for him under any circumstances. Followed by José Luiz Datena (PSDB) with 39% and Boulos with 38%. Nunes has only 23%.
In this sense, the winners of the debate would be the federal deputy of the PSOL and the candidate Tabata Amaral (PSB). “They did very well, they were programmatic. Boulos encouraged Nunes, because he was interested in weakening the mayor. Tabata continued to be proactive and incisive”, explained the professor.
Boulos showing toxicology was important
According to the political scientist and professor of the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM) and the Fundação Escola de Sociologia de São Paulo (FESPSP), Paulo Niccoli Ramirez, the fact that Guilherme Boulos showed the toxicological examination in the final part of the debate was symbolically important. “It broke any prejudice against him regarding cocaine use, because he was a leftist,” he explained.
Ramirez also stressed that the movement should give the federal deputy breathing room in these last days before the first round, when there is no television election advertising, in front of the former coach, who dominates engagement on social media. In this way, Ricardo Nunes would also be at a disadvantage, since he is the weakest among the leaders of the digital environment.
Carlos Melo believes that the strategy was preventive. “It seems there was apprehension about what Pablo Marçal might do in the last debate without Boulos having time to react,” he explained.
“He could have asked Marçal if he would present evidence of the accusations made, but he preferred to present the burden of proof immediately,” Melo said. “He got a reprimand, but I’d say it wasn’t much. Boulos could have been warned and wasted time. So it was a satisfying thing.”
