The ruling party’s goal is to “reduce the family tree”
The conservative Força Itália (FI) party, one of the pillars of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, presented a bill this weekend that imposes restrictions on the transmission of citizenship by right of blood (jus sanguinis) to Italian descendants.
Currently, this principle allows foreigners to obtain dual nationality if they demonstrate Italian origins, regardless of generation, which tens of thousands of people have already benefited from, especially in countries such as Brazil and Argentina.
However, FI’s proposal provides that Italian descendants will no longer be able to apply for citizenship if their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were born outside Italy.
The rule would only apply to those born after the law came into force, i.e. it would not affect processes already underway. “There are many frauds that worry us, which is why we decided to reduce the family tree. We want to avoid citizenship fraud, which cannot become a business, because it is a serious thing”, said the Italian deputy prime minister and foreign minister . , Antonio Tajani, leader of FI, a party founded by Silvio Berlusconi.
In recent years, several investigations in Italy have revealed fraud and corruption in jus sanguinis citizenship processes in small municipalities, often involving switchboard operators and candidates of Brazilian origin.
Another pillar of the bill is the so-called “jus italiae” (Italian law, in free translation), which provides for the granting of citizenship to foreigners born in Italy or arriving in the country before the age of five when they turn 16, but provided they have resided in the country for an uninterrupted decade and have completed their education up to that age group.
The initiative also provides for the loss of citizenship in the event that the child of immigrants is definitively convicted of certain crimes after becoming Italian.
The project, however, does not find unanimity in the Meloni base.
Last Saturday (5), members of the nationalist League party defined Tajani as a “human trafficker” during a demonstration in Pontida, forcing the party secretary, Matteo Salvini, also deputy prime minister and minister of Infrastructure and Transport, to apologize to my government colleague.
“There were four or five idiots, I apologize on their behalf.
Tajani is a friend and an ally, and the opponents are outside the government, not inside”, he declared – Right-wing groups argue that the “jus italiae” could open the doors to irregular immigration. Salvini, however, maintains the position according to which citizenship law “is as good as it is today” and that the issue is not a priority for Italians.
The Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, led by Meloni, has for the moment avoided taking a clear position. “Each group is free to present its own projects, we will discuss and see if there are points of convergence”, said the party group leader in the Chamber, Tommaso Foti. .
