US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris said Washington will continue to put pressure on Israel and other Middle Eastern players to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, even as they say the US has not so far used his influence on his ally.
In an interview with the CBS program “60 Minutes,” Kamala said that diplomatic work with Israel is “an ongoing pursuit,” according to an excerpt released this Sunday.
Kamala dodged a question in an interview about whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was a “really close ally.”
“I think, with all due respect, the better question is whether we have a meaningful alliance between the American people and the Israeli people, and the answer to that question is yes,” Kamala said.
Kamala reiterated Washington’s position of supporting Israel’s right to self-defense against Iran and Iranian-backed militant groups such as Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah.
“Now, the work we do at the diplomatic level with the Israeli leadership is an ongoing quest to make our principles clear,” he said.
“We will not stop putting pressure on Israel and the region, including Arab leaders,” Kamala said.
Washington’s occasional condemnation of Israel for the number of civilians killed in the war has been mostly verbal, with no substantive change in policy.
