Ines and Ivan, love in the theme: how much is this romantic and social comedy on France 2?

This Wednesday, October 9, France 2 airs Inés and Ivan, Love on a String, a romantic and social comedy directed by Alexandre Castaniet (Tamara, Mixte).

The film tells the story of Ines, played by the sparkling Shemss Audat (Un si grand soleil, La jeunesse et la nuit), an unemployed Parisian who moves in with her sister to Mouillad-sur-Mer in the Charente just in time to return. our feet

Reluctantly, Ines applies for a job at a local textile company. But on his first day, he is mistaken for the new CEO, who has arrived to implement a social plan.

Instead of restoring the truth, Ines decides to take advantage of this misunderstanding and pocket a month’s salary. Despite the enmity of Ivan, the founder of the company, played by Bruno Debrandt (Daughters of Fire, Lost River), he gives himself a month to save the company and thereby keep the workers’ jobs.

But things get complicated when feelings get involved and Ines and Ivan’s collaboration takes an unexpected turn…

A romantic comedy with a social background

By choosing a textile company in crisis as its backdrop, the film does not limit itself to a mere romance but deals with social issues that are strongly connected in reality, giving a deeper dimension to this comedy.

The screenplay by Yael Berdugo and Natalie Levy-Lang aims to show the efforts of Ivan and Ines to save this company and protect the workers threatened with dismissal.

Of course, we won’t escape the codes of the genre, nor the sweet and honeyed moments of a good romantic comedy. However, these two worlds blend well together and allow us to avoid, at least slightly, the trap of superficial romance.

The other side of the coin is that romance takes longer. It must be said that the film prefers to frame the company and play funny situations to the detriment of romance, which really only comes from the second half of the film. It’s enough to infuriate fans of the genre.

Ines and Ivan, a lovely couple

Therefore, if it contains originality, the script relies heavily on its characters.

Shemss Audat easily transitions into the role of Ines, this energetic woman who is not afraid. We are really enjoying following his journey. Initially driven by opportunism, Ines transforms into a woman willing to do anything to save this textile company.

Both sparkling and sunny, Shemss Audat offers a nuanced character full of sincerity whose interpretation is a source of genuine novelty.

Bruno Debrandt plays a more earthy and almost ascetic character. A perfect contrast to the abundance of Inés. Even if his performance is solid and touching, it still provides less brilliance than Shemss Audat’s.

Still, this contrast between their two characters is undoubtedly the strength of the duo, who work so well together on screen. Ines and Ivan’s relationship is believable, even if it could have benefited from better development.

In short, Ines and Ivan, Love on a String is a beautiful romantic comedy that nevertheless suffers from the length, the simplicity of the script and the sometimes somewhat fragile balance between romance and social issues.

Fortunately, the pair of Shemss Audat and Bruno Debrant almost make us forget the small flaws of the film, which remains perfect for a relaxing evening!
