The movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas” makes it clear that Jack Skellington and his friends have been in Halloween Town for a long time, so it’s possible that none of them remember exactly how they got there or what they died of.
However, fans have been paying attention to the details of Tim Burton’s film and have developed several theories, such as that The Strange World of Jack and Corpse Bride are the same story, or that there are hidden clues as to how each character died. We explain it to you.
Jack Skellington
The protagonist of the story is Jack, a tall, thin frame who is known as the “Pumpkin King” since his importance and influence in the town exceeds that of the current mayor.
As the town of monsters merrily sings “This is Halloween,” Jack makes his appearance in the most spectacular way: a flaming scarecrow.
His strange entrance could be a reference to him being burned alive. It is not known exactly how old Jack is, but in ancient times such harsh punishments were relatively common.
It is also possible that he died from being thrown in acid, which left him completely skinless. This theory is supported in a short sequence at the end of the song in which the skeleton emerges from a fountain of a rather strange greenish liquid.
Zero
Jack’s friendly and loyal ghost dog was perfect for impersonating Rudolph the Reindeer when the King of Halloweentown wanted to replace Santa Claus. It’s possible that poor Zero died of electrocution, due to his glowing nose and appearance of being made of smoke.
Exit
Sally is made from the bodies of several women, which is a reference to Frankenstein’s monster. But, it is possible that she was originally a woman who suffered a dismemberment death.
Although at various times his stitches come apart and he loses a leg or some other limb, he is so skilled with thread and needle that he can mend it in an instant.
The Mayor from “The Strange World of Jack”
The mayor is one of the most comical characters in the film, due to his apparent inability to rule Halloween Town and his peculiar way of expressing his emotions.
When he is happy, his face shows a huge smile, but when he is angry, his face literally changes into furious features. This ability implies that the mayor died when he broke his neck, although it is not known if he was also a politician in his previous life.
Lock, Shock and Barrel
While some people believe that these children were victims of Oogie Boogie, it is quite possible that they actually froze to death. His death could have happened on Halloween night, which is why they continue to wear their costumes. One of the most visible proofs of this theory is that when they remove their masks they look pale and their lips turn blue.
Doctor Flinklenstein
Mad scientist who thought Sally was his property, so he treated her cruelly and wouldn’t let her out in the city. His obsession with opening and closing his skull may indicate that his death was due to an experiment gone terribly wrong, but he could also have been murdered by his former assistant, which is why he’s always been suspicious of Sally .
