The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry reiterated on Tuesday its “absolute respect” for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and said that the statements of the Venezuelan attorney general, who accused him of having become a “CIA agent”, have a “very personal”.
Prosecutor Tarek Saab said in a television interview that Lula, as well as Chilean President Gabriel Boric, were spokesmen “for a left” representing American intelligence in the region.
“The recent statements of the Attorney General of the Republic on President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (…) do not at any time reflect the position of the federal government, responsible for Venezuelan foreign policy,” wrote Chancellor Yván Gil on the Telegram messaging platform .
Venezuela “reaffirms absolute respect for the historical path of President Lula da Silva and his leadership in Brazil, as well as for the relations between countries, states and peoples that will continue to strengthen,” Gil added.
Lula, together with his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro, is looking for a way out of the political crisis in Venezuela after the presidential elections in July.
The Brazilian president has called for the publication of electoral documents supporting President Nicolás Maduro’s victory and has already said that the Venezuelan government has an authoritarian tendency.
