Hollywood 1951. Director David Merrill was put on the famous blacklist of people suspected of being members of the Communist Party. He then refuses to defend himself against possible denunciation…

It goes without saying that McCarthyism, taken from the name of this fiercely anti-communist US senator, was one of the darkest periods in the history of the United States, and then in the midst of the Cold War. disaster Congressional Committee on Un-American ActivitiesA committee investigating anti-American activities of the United States House of Representatives then engaged in a witch hunt. It is known that Hollywood did not spare, creating a climate of terror and paranoid suspicion.

Many talents were summoned to be heard before this commission, and they were often ordered to give the names of suspected communists. The result: blacklisting on the famous blacklist of names that studios refuse to hire.

Bob and Marty are in the boat

This evil blacklist is at the heart of the film of the same name, released in 1991 and directed by Irwin Winkler; A man known for his work as a Hollywood producer. A fairly forgotten work, very little mentioned in Robert De Niro’s large filmography, which came out of the filming of Goodfellas. And this is a (small) injustice.

Fascinating subject matter aside, the film offers a not-so-frequent opportunity to see Robert De Niro – impeccable as usual – opposite his longtime alter ego, Martin Scorsese! We’re obviously aware of the legendary collaboration that brings these two together, but it was primarily Niro in front of Marty’s camera and the filmmaker behind it.

We can also add that apart from a few cameos, Scorsese has done little acting; In this register, we especially remember his composition as Vincent van Gogh in Akira Kurosawa’s Glorious Dreams.

A solid work with well-written characters, The Blacklist is available for free on the france.tv website until October 29. The only condition, insignificant, is to create an account. The rest is free!
