Former goalkeeper Bruno wins the case against the publisher who published a book on the Eliza Samudio case

With an appealable decision, the judge decided to compensate R$ 30,000 for moral damages and improper use of the images

The record publisher will have to pay R$30,000 for using Bruno Fernandes’ image without authorization. The former goalkeeper, convicted of the murder of Eliza Samudio, has won a case against the author of the book which recounts the crime in which the former athlete was involved in 2010. The decision can be appealed.

The work “Indefensible – The goalkeeper Bruno and the story of the death of Eliza Samudio” was published in 2014. The case is being considered by the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJ-RJ) and it was decided that it will be paid only the fine. In other words, the book will not remain on sale, as the image of the former Flamengo goalkeeper has been exposed due to the repercussions of the case.

Bruno Fernandes’ defense expected to get something like R$1 million from the trial, but only got R$30,000 from the decision. Judge Luiz Cláudio Silva Jardim Marinho, who judged the case, ruled that the photographer’s authorization was not sufficient to publish the image.

After becoming a book in 2014, Eliza Samudio’s case became a documentary on Netflix in September this year. The crime occurred in 2010 and the former model’s body was never found by the authorities.

The former goalkeeper, in turn, has been on probation since 2023 and currently works as a furniture deliveryman in the Lagos region of Rio de Janeiro. He also became a partner in an açaí shop and participates in the region’s floodplain soccer leagues.

Documentary by Eliza Samaudio

The Netflix documentary “The Invisible Victim” gained access to Eliza Samudio’s personal computer and brought new revelations about the case. Among the discoveries, a message exchange between the model and a friend, who begged for peace to raise her son and said she would not “piss off” former goalkeeper Bruno, attracted a lot of attention.

Eliza believed Bruno’s intentions when she met him in Rio and, together with her newborn son, went to Contagem, Minas Gerais, at the invitation of the former goalkeeper. The journey, however, had a different ending than expected for the model, who remained in private prison until her killing.

“He said he wants a chance, that we have to live in harmony, that we have a child,” Eliza wrote in the messages. After his friend’s response, he continued, “That I don’t deserve everything you’ve done to me, but that you’re going to show that you can do things differently now.”
