Intimate and delicate staging
Maria is the daughter of Spanish immigrants who fled Francoism to dream of freedom in France. In Paris, his mother, with the physique of a movie star, is a cleaning lady, and his father, always with a ball of rouge in his hand, is the janitor of the Mikodier Theater. The three lived in a small dressing room on the top floor of the theater, which at the time specialized in Boulevard productions.
Maria’s unique background, with a whimsical personality and a dysfunctional family member, would have been enough to turn her into an artist. But there’s something else: a student at a film school, he tries in vain to portray his origins in his short films. Until a card reader reveals to her that there is a secret to her birth…

Adapted from Marie Larrea’s acclaimed intimate and personal novel, The People of Bilbao Are Born Where They Will, directed by the excellent Johanna Boyer (I’m not running, I’m flying!). The decor consists of a simple thread curtain, on which images are regularly displayed that accompany the actor’s monologues, while guitar tones emphasize the scenes and develop the sensitive atmosphere of the work. This musical touch will undoubtedly excite the audience.
From an immigrant family in which poverty and alcohol violently affect daily life, a young woman searching for truth and identity regularly revels in these family dysfunctions. This combination of light shows and traditional Spanish music perfectly complements Maria’s tragicomic story.

A perfectly executed piece
Audiences will be delighted to see Berenice Bejo, who won a César for Best Actress in The Artist, set the scene on fire with this single in an emotional burlesque scene. He plays every character and alternates between Spanish and French, all with impressive fluidity.
In this highly embodied work, Berenia Bejo paints the portrait of a woman with precision and dynamism. Let’s also note some resonance between Maria’s experience and the life of the Franco-Argentinian actress Berenia Bejo, who arrived in France at the age of three after her parents fled a military dictatorship.
Current and sensitive, with director Johanna Boye’s sharp productions, subjects such as stigmatization or self-discovery are thus portrayed with poetry and, above all, with a good dose of humor!

If the heroine’s experience is unique, it remains universal with themes discussed that will undoubtedly touch every viewer.
The people of Bilbao are born where they want to be discovered until December 22 at the Marigny Theatre, Tuesdays to Saturdays until 7pm and Sundays until 6pm.
