McLaren’s Lando Norris has laughed at comments made by Red Bull about his alleged mental weaknesses, and considers it typical of the mental game played when a Formula 1 title is at stake.
Recently, Red Bull Motorsport consultant Helmut Marko compared the Briton unfavorably to reigning champion Max Verstappen and pointed to his pre-race “rituals” as evidence of vulnerability.
Norris told reporters at the United States Grand Prix that the Austrian’s comments had perhaps been mistranslated and assured that he was not bothered.
“I don’t really care if people say what they want, good or bad, about me. I’m honestly not that worried. I prefer nice things, but it’s a game,” said the 24-year-old driver.
“Everyone tries to do their part, whether it’s the team bosses, the drivers or the managers. Everyone tries to do it to each other, take their little jabs and make comments. I think they (Red Bull) are a bit more accustomed to doing it than us as a team,” added the Briton.
“I think we’re a bit more honest, a team focused on ourselves. Red Bull definitely loves that side of trying to play and say things more.”
Norris is Verstappen’s closest rival in the title race but is 52 points behind three-time world champion Red Bull with six races to go. The two are close friends but fierce rivals on the track.
