A debate between Nunes and Boulos is also scheduled for this Saturday, organized by Record and Estadão, starting at 9pm. See what candidates’ mornings and afternoons were like on the street.
Boulos cancels the road program
A few days before the second round and with Ricardo Nunes in the lead, Guilherme Boulos was supposed to carry out two “turning marches” together with President Lula and his vice-president. Marta Suplicy (PT).
The first event was scheduled for 10 am in the Grajaú region. However, with dozens of voters already present and in the rain, the walk took place canceled around 11am. The act allegedly took place in an electoral area of Lula in the 2022 presidential elections, but which had Nunes’ majority in the first round.
Even in the rain, voters and supporters of Boulos and Lula gathered along Avenida Antonio Carlos Benjamin dos Santos. Some, wearing raincoats, tried to protect themselves in street shops while they waited. However, with the announcement of the cancellation, the crowd slowly began to disperse.
Another walk was planned for 3pm in the eastern area of São Paulo. However, it was also cancelled. “I would like to thank everyone who participated and mobilized for our walks this Saturday in Grajaú and São Mateus. Unfortunately, due to the rain, which is already causing blackouts in several neighborhoods of São Paulo, our walks had to be cancelled,” the candidate said.
Live with Lula
In the early afternoon, Lula and Boulos participated in a live television broadcast, discussing measures to help the population affected by the rains and the recent blackout. Lula promised that the federal government will help in the recovery of lost assets, including offering lines of credit to entrepreneurs and assistance to residents who have been without electricity for more than 24 hours.
Furthermore, Lula criticized the administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes, accusing the city of not pruning the trees and inspecting the energy concessionaires. He also apologized for not participating in today’s electoral events, but assured that he will be in Sao Paulo in the next few days to support Boulos.
Boulos will continue his program this Saturday, with his confirmed participation in the debate broadcast on Record TV and Estadão at 9pm.
Nunes at the religious event
Eight days before the second round of the municipal elections, the current administrator of the capital of São Paulo found himself in the Sanctuary of Santa Mãe de Deus, in the South Zone of São Paulo, where he attended the mass presided over by Father Marcelo Rossi and next to Bishop Dom José Gilberto Kassabpresident of the PSD, and Rodrigo Goulart, city councilor of São Paulo.
Mayor and re-election candidate Ricardo Nunes told reporters that he will participate in the debate promoted by Record and Estadão, which will take place at 9pm. The coach has missed the last three debates against his opponent Guilherme Boulos (PSOL). In an interview at the end of the ceremony, the mayor said he had asked “a lot of São Pedro so that there is less rain and less gusts of wind”.
“The first expectation is that in the city there are no gusts of wind, there is no rain and I will be able to participate. I will be there”, he underlined.
To justify himself, Nunes claimed that his absence in the previous clashes was due to meetings with Enel to resolve the lack of electricity in thousands of properties in the capital. “This meeting was very important for the mayor to be able to talk about what happened on Friday and the event planned for yesterday and today with the alarm from the ombudsman. Therefore there was no way to intervene in the debate what happened to I will be there yesterday evening and this today because the situation is calm. What I see here now, calm, there should be nothing unusual until the time of the debate, I think it is nine o’clock at night,” he told reporters.
Also speaking to journalists, Nunes defined the psolist Guilherme Boulos as a “dictator”, after the candidate had asked the court not to disclose a survey by Datafolha, accusing the institute of “lack of transparency”. For the current mayor, Boulos’ attitude is anti-democratic: “There is a trace of a dictator there, who wants to censor the publication of a poll in the press. I regret it.”
Repercussion among believers
At a certain point in the mass, Msgr. Dom José thanked the mayor for participating in the ceremony and introduced him to the faithful present.
Patricia Raposo, 52, has been frequenting the sanctuary for some time. Questioned by Earth As for the manager’s presence, he said he considered the gesture “trivial”. Her friend Eulalia Gomes, 53, agrees. “I wouldn’t vote for him, because he could be here and in another church. But I think his presence here influences other people’s votes.”
Faithful Márcia Moreira, 54, believes that Nunes’ presence at mass means that he is a “good person” and that he is “looking for religion.” Her husband, José Messias, 71, said he took advantage of the mayor’s presence to thank him. “He gave his support and brought the municipality to the Veleiros region. The priest managed on his own and made the school very good, with guidance, uniforms and food.”
