Corinthians is aiming for the Copa do Brasil final also to give some relief to their accounts

Timão suffers from liquidity problems and the prizes in the knockout competition could give the board some breathing space

Corinthians decides its life in the Copa do Brasil this Sunday (20/10), when it will face Flamengo, at 4pm, at the Neo Química Arena, in the semi-final of the competition. More than a place in the final, Timão is also aiming for the “fat” prize money of the tournament to give some relief to his accounts.

Corinthians’ big financial problem, despite the massive debt of R$2.1 billion, lies in cash flow and short-term revenues. These debts led to the club having its accounts frozen during the year. So, the extra money in the Copa do Brasil would be a big financial relief.

The Copa do Brasil finalist secures prize money of R$31.5 million. For the champion, the bonus is even bigger: R$73.5 million for the competition title. Furthermore, Timão is still alive in Sul-Americana, where he can still earn extra money. Next week the team will begin the duel with Argentine Racing for a place in the final of the continental tournament.

So far, Corinthians has already collected more than R$40 million in prizes. Added to this are all the amounts received in the Brazilian and South American Cups. If they were to reach the final this Sunday, Timão would receive almost the same amount in just one match.

Corinthians tries to make up for its early-year planning

Prize income in this second half-year exceeds the expectations of the club’s financial planning for the season. After all, the board had set the target of places in the round of 16 of the Brazilian Cup and the South American Cup. However, the performances in the Paulistão and the Brazilian championship fell short of expectations. Alvinegro therefore needs this money to compensate for his failure in other competitions, as well as give his coffers financial breathing space.
