Endless succession: Disney leaves announcement of new CEO until 2026

THE The Walt Disney Company announced on Monday (21) the appointment of James Gorman as chairman of the board of directors, replacing Mark Parker after nine years. The company also reported that a new CEO will be named in early 2026, a position currently held by Bob Iger.

“This deadline reflects the progress the Succession Planning Committee and the Board are making and will allow sufficient time for a successful transition before Bob Iger’s contract expires in December 2026,” the statement read.

Disney’s succession at the helm has been tumultuous since Iger returned to the role in late 2022 to replace his chosen successor, Bob Chapek, who was fired. The manager would remain in office for two years, but the company has since extended his contract.

Gorman currently chairs the Succession Planning Committee of Disney’s board of directors, which is working to identify and groom the company’s next CEO.

“Drawing on his wealth of experience, James is skillfully leading the extensive search process for a new CEO, which continues to be a top priority for the Board,” said Parker, who is CEO of NIKE and will leave the role on March 2. January .

Who is James Gorman?

The future chairman of the board of directors of Walt Disney is executive chairman of Morgan Stanley, a position he will cease to hold in December of this year. The executive was Morgan Stanley’s CEO from 2010 to 2023 and president from 2012 to 2023.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Gorman held executive roles at Merrill Lynch and was a senior partner at McKinsey & Co. He serves as director of the Council on Foreign Relations and is a member of the Business Council.

Previously, he was a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and chairman of the Federal Advisory Council of the United States Federal Reserve Board. Gorman has been a director of the company since 2024.
