The food in ‘El Hoyo 2’ was real (and smelled horrible) and other weird things from the Netflix movie

The movie “El Hoyo 2” follows two young prisoners, Zamiatin and Perempúan, who must manage to survive in a dystopian prison that has 333 floors, through which a huge platform full of food descends.

The problem is that while prisoners at higher levels have easy access to food, those at lower levels often starve to death.

But was the food we saw in the movie real? Was the film shot vertically or were effects used? These and other questions were answered by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, director of “El hoyo 2”.

Where was ‘El Hoyo 2’ recorded?

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, director of “El Hoyo 2,” revealed that the Netflix movie was recorded at the Bilbao Exhibition Center. It is an exhibition space of 150,000 square meters, divided into six pavilions. It is located in the Biscayan municipality of Barakaldo, Basque Country, Spain.

Pavilion number six was activated as the location of “El Hoyo 2” and three levels of vertical structure were built there to represent the prison. This structure was key to the development of the plot, as it marked the order in which the scenes were shot.

Did they use special effects in ‘El Hoyo 2’?

The film’s director, Gaztelu-Urrutia, explained that these three naturally constructed levels were digitally recreated for “El Hoyo 2”:

We built almost all the sets for the film, almost 80%, and it’s all shot on a single 6×3 level, 4.30m high. We built three more levels to digitally expand and repeat.

However, the director explained that this was the only thing that was done digitally “Hole 2”as he asserted that the epic is distinguished by its artisanal character:

We wanted everything to be as real as possible. So to go from one level to another, wiring had to be created so the stuntmen and crew could move smoothly, but basically, it’s a movie that could have been made 100 years ago.

Was the food in ‘El Hoyo 2’ real?

‘El Hoyo 2’ actors Milena Smit, who plays Perempuan, and Hovik Keuchkerian, who plays Zamiatin, revealed other secrets from the film.

On the one hand, Howick expressed that the recording set was so well constructed that it really gave the actors the feeling of being locked up in a prison as seen in the film:

Everything was packed into a giant ship that you couldn’t get out of. It was uncomfortable, but at the same time it introduced you as a performer in that hole. You arrived on set and had no choice but to put yourself in the situation.

On the other hand, Milena Smit announced that initially the food with which they recorded the film was real. This would have been ideal for the film, if not for the fact that, over time, the food began to decompose and smell bad. Therefore, they had to exchange them for a scholarship:

We were 40 people stuck in a hole. And also, at first the food on the platform was real. The days went by and it smelled like ‘pocho’. I think it was chicken or fish. But when we started to like throwing up, they changed it to “pre-ice” material, thank goodness.

But the bad smell on set wasn’t just a product of the stale food, as the human odor of the trapped actors found its way onto the recording set as well:

In addition to the smell of food, there was also the sweat produced by human bodies in that small space. So it was normal to feel nauseous.

Was it in vertical construction in ‘El Hoyo 2’?

The short answer to this question would be yes, since a vertical structure was built for the purpose of ‘El Hoyo 2’.

However, it wasn’t as huge as it appears in the film, as only three levels were built and then digitally reproduced to create the rest of the levels seen in the film. In fact, the platform featured in “El Hoyo 2” is more common than it seems:

It is the standard platform used by all the projects in the world, the simplest one you can find, on which we put our real platform with food.

“El Hoyo 2” ending explained

At the end of “El Hoyo 2”, Perebuan follows his late colleague’s plan. He tricks the guards there into thinking she is dead and takes her to level 333. But when he gets there he sees a child in danger and instead of running away he decides to save the child.

Some suggest that this was so that, rather than escaping physically, Perebuan sought to achieve spiritual freedom and personal redemption through his actions.
