‘Ms. Marvel’: the revelation of the last episode will change the MCU forever

♫ Da na na naaaa na na… ♫

Spoilers for the ‘Ms Marvel’ ending below.

Previously in X Men ‘Ms Marvel’, one of the best series of 2022, Kamala Khan discovered an old family bracelet that gave her a series of strange abilities: the power to create and control constructs of light energy. “Magic, Absolute Magic”says Kamala’s father when he sees her use these powers in disguise in the last episode of the season. But there is much more here than mere witchcraft.

At first, this ability seemed like a huge departure from the comics. where Ms. Marvel can change the shape and size of her body. However, as the series progressed, we learned that this Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Kamala Khan actually inherited the power to access light from another dimensionand that this was due to her Djinn family genetics rather than simply the bracelet itself as a magical item.

This idea was not too far removed from its comic book origins, in which Kamala is an Inhuman and where her hidden abilities in her genes were activated by exposure to the Terrigen Mist (Terrigen Mists) instead of an old family heirloom. But the season one finale of ‘Ms Marvel’ just added yet another twist.. And it’s a truly game-changing twist to the MCU, one that could end up being the biggest innovation of Phase 4 and beyond.

After Kamala saves Kamran and becomes a full-fledged superhero, the series moves on for a week where everything settles down a bit. But we are not calm, because Bruno, Kamala’s best friend, has some news for our beloved Ms Marvel. As New Jersey’s resident ‘Science Bro’, Bruno has been secretly studying Kamala’s DNA in an attempt to understand why only she, and not the rest of her family, can access the Noor.. If it were just the DNA of the Djinn, all the other members in the Khan family would theoretically share the same powers as Kamala.

But they don’t. And even the underground Kamran struggles to harness those powers when he begins to manifest something similar. So what makes Kamala so special, aside from being Captain Marvel’s number one fan? “Kamala, there is something different in your genes,” says Bruno. “Like… a mutation”. Let’s not anticipate. A mutation doesn’t necessarily mean… Oh wait, is that the soundtrack to our childhood? ♪Da na na naaaa na na♪

Yes, just for a brief moment, the word “mutation” is accompanied by the theme song from the 1990s X-Men cartoonsthat is, the best cartoon series ever made.

And with that comes a not-so-subtle indication that the word “mutation” is actually linked to the X-Men. So does this mean that Kamala is the MCU’s first official “mutant”?

Patrick Stewart recently reprized his role as Charles Xavier from ‘X-Men’ in ‘Doctor Strange 2,’ making his Professor Xavier technically the first mutant to appear in the Marvel Studios movie universe. But that was on Earth-838. Multiverse nonsense aside, this is the first time that mutants, and the X-Men in general, have been recognized on Earth-616, the home of nearly every MCU project up to this point..

As Marvel fans probably already know, the rights to brands like X-Men and the Fantastic Four were long tied up with Fox Studios, even though they’re based on Marvel comics, which meant this merry band of Mutants had been written off of Marvel Studios movies for over a decade. All that changed recently when Disney’s merger with Fox meant the rights reverted to Marvel, and finally, finally, we’re seeing this pay off with the final big reveal of ‘Ms Marvel.’

However, Kamala’s reaction is much more casual. As we all freak out at the thought of finally seeing Wolverine in the MCU, Kamala just shrugs and says, “Whatever it is, it’s going to be another label.”.

Now that’s interesting, because historically the X-Men have been treated as strange and dangerous beings. That “tag” Kamala so casually refers to here actually carries a lot of weight, and the suggestion is that this intrinsic aspect of the mutation could carry over to the MCU as well.

Don’t be surprised if the introduction of the Department of Damage Control as an enemy this season could expand beyond the series., positioning them as humanity’s first intolerant response to mutants in general. After all, they don’t seem too thrilled when a teenager like Kamala begins to develop powers.

But, how will it be said “mutant domain”? Doctor Strange 2 featured a familiar version of Professor Xavier that fans are already familiar with, but for the most part, we suspect the MCU will shake things up with new casting decisions for most of these beloved characters. Well, Patrick Stewart himself hasn’t ruled out him turning up again, albeit for a different version of the role, one that hasn’t been butchered by Wanda.

Beyond that, no official word on what the X-Men will be like in the future, although it seems safe to assume that they will eventually star in their own movies instead of just appearing in Marvel series on Disney+. That said, we do know that new content from the ’90s series called ‘X-Men ’97’ has been commissioned for 2023, but that will continue the story originally told there, so it will be separate from what we see on the big screen. . So think less about Phoenix rehashes and more about Jean Grey’s blackouts.

Kamala’s latent mutation hints that other mutants like the X-Men have also existed in the MCU all this time., except that his powers must be activated in some external way. Could the Noor be key in this? Or will characters like Storm be introduced in another way?

The answers may come sooner than we think in ‘The Marvels’or maybe even sooner at San Diego Comic Con, which takes place July 20-24, 2022. But no matter what happens, no matter how the X-Men turn up, we guarantee you it’s going to be “magic.” absolute magic.”
