The plot tells the story of the radio host’s experience Kirat Assiwho was the victim of a catfishing scam for nearly a decade, believing she was in a long-distance relationship with a man named Bobbywith whom he has never spoken on the phone and has never met in person.
What is the story of “My Dear Bobby”?
In 2009, Kirat was in a troubled relationship with her ex. While his radio career was thriving, his love life was in shambles. That’s when she received an invitation on Facebook to connect with Bobby Jandu, a cardiologist who reportedly lived in New York. After nine years of online conversations, they developed a friendship that quickly turned into a virtual romance.
Despite Kirat’s persistent attempts to meet his beloved, Bobby always made excuses: he claimed that he was under a witness protection program or that he was hospitalized after being shot several times. Kirat had suspicions about the veracity of the stories, but, with Bobby’s friends and family confirming his wild narratives on social media, he believed he was exaggerating.

In 2018, after years spent in an abusive relationship in the virtual world, Kirat decided to hire a private investigator to uncover the truth about Bobby. The communicator obtained an address and, upon visiting it, discovered that Bobby really existed, but had no idea who he was.
The big reveal came when Kirat discovered that his cousin was behind the profile, Simran Bhogalwho had created more than 60 fake profiles to support the scam and manipulate Kirat. Shocked by the situation, the radio host asked the British justice system to see if something could be done.
However, in the UK, catfishing – creating a false identity to trick someone into an online relationship – is not considered a crime. Despite the severity of the emotional manipulation, Simran was never held legally responsible. In 2020, Kirat took the case to civil courts, obtaining a settlement that included a formal apology and payment of compensation. However, the emotional and psychological impact of the coup remains an open wound for Kirat.
