Anime fans, get ready: the live-action adaptation of the classic Yu Yu Hakusho is in development by Netflix, and the first image of protagonist Yusuke Urameshi has been released.

The portal IGN was responsible for spreading the first image of the anime adaptation (see below) which was a fever in Brazil in the 1990s and is still widely revered by otaku on national soil (and in other parts of the world, of course). Yusuke Urameshi will be played by Takumi Kitamura, known for appearing in another live-action version of a well-known anime, Tokyo Revengers.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a work signed by Yoshihiro Togashi (also known as Hunter x Hunter) and tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi. At the age of 14, he lives in a fight, but ends up dying saving a child in an accident. Thus, he has a second chance in life, but must work as a spiritual detective, guided by the spirit of the reaper Botan.

Botan, a woman, tells him that no one expected the delinquent to die doing an act of kindness, so there is no place in heaven or hell for him. Reviving and overcoming various trials, Yusuke becomes drawn into a mystery that encompasses the worlds of humans, demons and spirits.

“The original work is a universal and unique masterpiece and one of the reasons Japan is so proud of its strong anime and manga culture,” actor Kitamura told IGN.

Netflix promises intense action scenes and quality special effects for the anime adaptation. It is not yet known when Yu Yu Hakusho will debut on the streaming service.
