Botafogo remains top of the Brasileirão, after another victory
After the impressive victory over Peñarol in Libertadores last Wednesday (23), Botafogo is back on the field this Saturday (26) to face Red Bull Bragantino in the 25th round of the Brazilian championship. The match, played in Sao Paulo, ended with a narrow but decisive victory for the Rio team: 1-0, a result that distances the team from the relegation zone and maintains its leadership in the championship.
Unlike the 5-0 against Libertadores, the victory over Bragantino was more balanced, but equally important. Botafogo, who are fighting to stay at the top of the table, took advantage of Palmeiras’ stumble, who drew with Fortaleza (2-2), to consolidate their lead. With the victory, Alvinegro reached 64 points, opening a three-point lead over the Sao Paulo team.
The only goal of the match was scored by midfielder Gregore, shirt number 26, in the 40th minute of the second half, from a corner. The player celebrates the moment: “My feeling is of great joy for the moment of the club, for the moment also of my colleagues… I think that the players are experiencing a very beautiful moment, so much so that we have a lot of players from the national team, so yes… but I’m happy for the three points and it’s… we worry about every game, every game, the next one is always more important, so we proceed step by step to achieve our goals” – commented Gregore.
In the first half Botafogo showed an offensive attitude, dominating the actions and accumulating shots that threatened Bragantino. In the second half the Rio team recovered with even more pressure and, with the goal at the end of the match, they secured the three points. The result leaves Bragantino in 16th place, with 34 points, while Botafogo is the first team out of the relegation zone.
On Bragantino’s side, midfielder Raul regretted the goal conceded: “I think the discussion is normal in the game, right… A goal from an inactive ball there at the far post, Gregore, on the right, was satisfied with the shot very strong head and unfortunately it didn’t happen… we got to the ball, but we couldn’t avoid it. It’s a difficult moment, we know the sequence of matches that await us, we have direct clashes, we have to be very realistic.. so we can’t deceive the fans. We know the capabilities of our group and unfortunately we didn’t achieve good results, we conceded a goal and had to play “all or nothing”. Work and get out of this situation as soon as possible, which we know is very bad” – said Raul.
The victory prepares Botafogo for the important match against Vasco, on November 5, at home, at the Nilton Santos Stadium. Before that, Alvinegro will travel to Uruguay to face Peñarol, on Wednesday (30), in the decisive match of the Libertadores semi-final.
Coach Arthur Jorge commented on the team’s attitude and concentration for the next matches: “We came with a very clear intention, what we were looking for was to win. We knew the difficulties we would have because this “Red Bull” is a team a team that has good people, has a good team, a great coach, but we knew what we needed, which was the last 24 points in the league, that for us it was very important to win here today, because it is part of the mission of the team, to be able to survive in this competition and be able to maintain first place… So we played a very competent match. As for the Libertadores, I’m not going to look at the match any other way, I can’t do anything contrary to that I say, win the match obviously…” – declared Arthur.
With the positive result, Botafogo remains firmly at the top of the Brasileirão and maintains the momentum to seek a place in the Libertadores final.
