‘It could be funny’: How Tom Hardy discovered the voice of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises

Tom Hardy is undoubtedly one of the best actors of his generation. The Oscar nominee for his role in The Revenant opposite Leonardo DiCaprio may have spent much of the last six years playing Venom, but he was also seen in Capone in 2020 and most recently in The Bikeriders. And we’re not forgetting the many iconic characters he’s played, from Mad Max to some Baneโ€ฆ

Appreciation for his acting genius was recently celebrated during the press tour for the latest Venom: The Last Dance, when the former Christopher Nolan frontman detailed how he found the voice for the iconic character.

While Bane’s accent in The Dark Knight Rises has long been the subject of affectionate derision, it’s still recognized as iconic. And such intonation is not a coincidence, but the result of deep research, as Tom Hardy explained recently.

One was to introduce a new villain after the Joker had played such an important role for fans, and accepting a new villain meant taking a risk that was not negotiable anyway.– he explains in an interview with Fox.

Christopher Nolan is such a genius, he had a very specific idea. And that set the stage for being like, โ€œOkay, should I do a generic bad guy voice? I can calculate and create something cold, dark and evil, without light, without color, without fun. Or, Bane is technically Latin, so I had to look at that option and ask myself, “How can I justify this?”“, he explained.

He continued: “And I looked at the gypsies of Latin descent and found Bartley Gorman, king of the gypsies, a naked fighter. And it has a melodic accent that has been everywhere in the mix since the time of travel. There’s a lot of different voices, and I was playing that anthem for Chris and I said, ‘Hey, we can really be laughed at here. It can be funny. But he’s an interesting voice figure and it can work because physically he’s like a gorilla, he’s primitive, he’s dangerous and scary, but he’s very sophisticated when he talks. He likes his own voice, so maybe we should give it some color.
