One of the most profitable film genres in the industry, with several blockbuster releases annually, horror can be very subjective in terms of the fear it provides to its audience. However, now, a list of MoneySupermarket’s Science of Scare listed the scariest films according to science.

It is worth highlighting how the study in question has been carried out every year – since 2020. The research involves hundreds of volunteers who watch hours of horror films while monitoring their heart rate. Each feature is then rated based on its effect on the audience’s heart rate, which is then assigned a score based on the highest heart rate change achieved among viewers.

According to the study, the scariest horror movie of all time is The Entity (2012), supernatural horror directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Ethan Hawke (Ellison Oswalt), which scored a score of 96.

Second place went to Be Careful Who Callsfrom 2020, with 95. The podium ends with the success of 2022 Skinamarink – Lullabywhich came in third place, with 91. Most of the features on the list were released in the 21st century, such as Hereditary (2018), Conjuring (2013), Terrifier 3 (2024) and He used to smile (2022).
