This film was remade 25 times in eight years! Released in 2016, its theme and colossal success in its homeland convinced countries around the world to try to copy it. And that movie is Paolo Genovese’s Perfetti sconosciuti (“Perfect Strangers”) PureBreak.
Released direct-to-VOD in France, this Italian comedy appealed to AlloCiné viewers, who gave it an average rating of 3.8 out of 5. It tells the story of a meeting of friends over dinner, during which everyone agrees to share their texts and emails publicly. And we call on magazines to reveal their little (or even big) secrets.
Does this remind you of anything?
If this pitch reminds you of anything, it’s because you’ve probably seen one of the 25 remakes of this Italian film. A French version, simply titled Le Jeu, was released in 2018, directed by Fred Cavae.
Berenice Bejo, Suzanne Clement, Stéphane de Grodt, Vincent Elbaz, Grigory Gadebois, Doria Tillier, Roshdi Zem and Fleur Fitus were cast as friends. The film received a total of 1,639,781 participants.
THE Guinness Book of Records With 24 films (counting stopped in January 2024), Perfetti sconosciuti is the feature film that has seen the most remakes. There is also another one from the date of validation of this record that started in India last August. India, who has already made a movie twice with The 12th Man and 1001 Nunakal.
Other countries that have embraced Paolo Genovese’s concept include Spain (Perfectos desconocidos), Germany (Das perfekte Geheimnis), Mexico (Perfectos desconocidos) and Poland ((Nie)znajomi).
But why not an American remake?
The English-language film adaptation rights to Perfetti Sconosciuti were bought by the Weinstein Company in 2017 when the firm’s boss, Harvey Weinstein, was the subject of multiple sexual assault and rape allegations spurred by the #MeToo movement.
Because the Weinstein Company collapsed in the wake of these events, the legal status of such a remake remains unclear.
