Rescuers are still searching for victims of the torrential rain

More than 50 people have died due to torrential rains and floods in the province of Valencia, Spain, a toll expected to rise due to the many missing.

The disaster was caused by a phenomenon known as an Isolated High Level Depression (DANA), which occurs when a mass of cold air falls on another of warm air, producing heavy rain.

According to a report released by the Valencian Community, at least 51 deaths have been confirmed so far, while rescuers are working to search for victims in the flooded areas.

Flooding is also reported in the autonomous communities of Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.

“We were trapped like mice. Cars and garbage containers were dragged along the streets by the current,” said Ricardo Gabaldón, mayor of Utiel, a city near Valencia.

“The water rose up to three metres,” he added.

The rains also left around 40,000 people without electricity, while rail links between the capital Madrid and Valencia were disrupted due to damage to rail lines. The National Congress of Spain suspended its sessions this Wednesday (30).

In an article in X, Italy’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, expressed solidarity with the families of the flood victims. “Due to the esteem and respect I have for him, I am at the side of King Philip VI, a symbol of national unity in this difficult moment”, underlined the chancellor. .
